The Causes of Bile Duct Injury

Bile duct injuries can be incredibly painful and cause a lot of problems to your health if not treated and dealt with quickly and with extreme care. Bile duct injuries are a known risk within abdominal surgery, particularly surgery to the gallbladder although studies estimate that bile duct injuries occur in around one in 1,000 cases of gallbladder removal surgery.

A bile duct injury is most likely to occur during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy which is an operation to remove the gallbladder and it is usually a form of treatment for gallstones. The bile duct is at risk during this type of surgery because it is actually attached to the gallbladder. The surgery is generally done through a few small cuts in the abdomen. A camera and light are then attached to a scope which goes into one cut allowing the surgeon to see what is going on and guide his or her movements.

During this operation the bile duct must be clipped, the gallbladder removed and then the wound is stitched together to make sure that bile does not leak out and into the abdominal cavity.

Sadly, things do not always proceed smoothly and it is at this stage where issues might occur. If the bile duct is not clipped properly, it could it get cut, burnt or perforated. Injury can also be caused if the area around the gallbladder and bile ducts are masked meaning the surgeon cannot see the area properly. It can also be as simple as the surgeon not performing the operation with the care and level of expertise that it needs, resulting in medical negligence.

If the bile duct is injured during an operation, to avoid further complications, the surgeon must revert to open surgery and perform an immediate repair. If this repair is performed without delay and with the appropriate level of skill, the patient can avoid further complications.

Bile duct injuries can lead to numerous issues which can lead to ongoing medical problems so if errors are made in clinical procedures.
